Following the continued commitment of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Brunei Darussalam National Expanded Programme on Immunisation has successfully contributed to the status of Brunei Darussalam as one of the countries declared by the World Health Organization as Malaria free in 1987; Polio free in 2000, Measles free in 2015 and Rubella free in 2018. This matter was shared by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Md Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health in a Message in conjunction with the World Immunisation Week 2024.

Yang Berhormat stated that Brunei Darussalam is fortunate as all the country's citizens and residents can receive vaccination services from the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Ministry of Health. Brunei Darussalam's National Children Immunisation Programme has achieved and maintained child immunisation coverage at a level that exceeds 95 per cent coverage every year. Yang Berhormat explained that the achievement proves that the National Immunisation Development Programme and vaccination initiatives in the country are effective and vital in providing early protection or prevention not only to an individual but to the surrounding such as family members and the community.

However, despite the success of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation at the global level, there are still challenges in access and intake of vaccines that can threaten the health and well-being of millions of people, especially in communities that have less access to medical services. Yang Berhormat added, in celebrating World Immunisation Week, the Ministry of Health will continue to commit and strive to further strengthen immunisation services in the country for all its residents, of all ages, as well as to ensure that the impact of vaccines continues to bring us closer to a world free from the threat of disease which can be prevented. This year, Brunei Darussalam together with other member countries of the World Health Organization, celebrates World Immunisation Week which is celebrated every year from 24th to 30th April 2024. This year's celebration carries the theme 'Humanly Possible'. It is a reminder of the progress that has been achieved by humans in maintaining global health through vaccines to prevent diseases.
